How To Start a Team

  1. Contact Oklahoma Boys Volleyball Association 

  • Contact OKBVA expressing interest in starting a boys volleyball team at your school. 

  • OKBVA will provide you with resources to get your team off the ground & answer any initial questions you may have. 

  1. Recruit Boys to Play 

  • Open for 7th–12th graders. 

  • If a school has 16+ players, we suggest running a JV and Varsity team.

  1. Find a Coach/Team Lead 

  • This can be the same person…parent, teacher, etc. 

  • Responsibilities include, but not limited to: being the contact person for OKBVA directors to schedule games, collecting player dues/paying team dues, and scheduling practice times. 

  • Resources for finding a coach can be found here! 

  1. Talk to Your Athletic Director 

  • Create a school-recognized, boys high school volleyball club or intramural team through the Athletic/Activities Department. 

  • Ask about using gym space for practices and games (Jan-May). 

  • Ask about using volleyball equipment – net system & volleyballs (girls volleyball program or physical education department). 

  • Ask if you can market the boys volleyball team throughout the school. 

  • Ask if there are any funding opportunities through the school. 

  • A list of courts that are available to rent can be found here! 

  1. Obtain Jerseys & Equipment 

  • Jerseys – using old jerseys from other sports or create new jerseys.

  • Volleyballs – If unable to purchase boys volleyballs, utilize volleyballs from girls volleyball program or physical education department. 

  1. Funding 

  • Establish what player dues will be. 

  • OKBVA has a budget template available if needed. 

  • If you have a specific financial need, you can apply for grant funding here! 

  1. Sign up to be in the OKBVA League 

  1. Season Dates

  • The Spring league will run from early March to mid mid-May. There will be an end-of-season tournament to determine the State Champion. 

Every effort should be made to start a team at your school. If a student still needs a team, then they can submit an appeal to join a nearby team here!

 

What the league fee covers…

  1. Insurance

    • Insurance coverage provided by Oklahoma Boys Volleyball Association (OKBVA).

  1. Scheduling

    • OKBVA will create match & tournament schedule in coordination with Team Leads/Coaches.

  1. Officiating

    • OKBVA will handle the hiring, scheduling, & paying of officials.
